Tracy Austin-Youngest Player to Win the US Open

Dying to get out of the cold and work on your tennis game? Smug Californians need not reply.

Join me and Tracy Austin April 15-19, 2015 for Curtain Bluff’s Annual Fantasy Tennis Camp Week. Tracy will be joined on the courts by Johan Kriek and Tom Gullikson.

Tennis Camps for Adults

I recently wrote a story about tennis camps for adults in Greenwich Magazine. I didn’t include Curtain Bluff, it’s so much fun it’s more like a vacation-with world class tennis on the side. I mean, who wants to slog it out with hardcore overhead drills when there are tropical cocktails and catamarans to be enjoyed?

Did I mention the spa?

What you need to know:

Curtain Bluff is an award winning beach resort on the Caribbean island of Antigua. There are only 72 rooms, and no room keys. Everything is included, even the tropical drinks. Don’t be fooled by the title “all inclusive”, there really needs to be a term for “expensive food and over the top service” that’s already baked in to your bill. You pay one price for the tennis camp that will include your room, all food and drink as well as tennis instruction. Rates start at $795 per night/single occupancy.

Drink service in your hammock? Included

You’ll earn your hammock/spa time after four days on the court with these world class tennis pros. Players are split in to two groups based on ability. Each group has instructional clinics in the morning for two hours.

Think drills, but with a view, and Tracy Austin feeding the balls. I know, right?

Tracy Austin is even nicer than you think she might be

There is a long break for lunch, or booze. I usually chose booze. The hotel serves up lunch by the beach buffet style or you can head in to town. My tennis partner and I felt we played better in the afternoon clinics following a wine soaked lunch at nearby Catherine’s Cafe Plage in English Harbour.

Rose improves your forehand-really

The afternoons are reserved for competitive play. Don’t panic, it’s all in good fun, the round robin play also includes instruction from the team of pros.

Yes-this is tennis “camp”

Powered by rose’ and vengeance

In addition to on court time with the pros, you’ll have a chance to mingle socially at Bluff House the night of the tennis camp cocktail party. The guest cocktail party is a tradition that goes back generations, it’s hosted by owner Chelle Hulford and manager Rob Sherman. Once you visit Curtain Bluff, you are a friend for life. Their return guest ratio is over 80% and many families have been coming annually for 20 years or more.

The charming and enigmatic Rob Sherman

If you’re a true tennis fan and looking for the perfect tennis camp for adults, this is as good as it gets. You’ll leave Curtain Bluff with a new forehand, a great tan, a pile of life long friends.

I wonder if Tracy knows we’re lifelong friends?

One of my favorite things about Curtain Bluff is their mission of giving back to the community. Howard and Chelle Hulford created the Old Road Fund. To date they have given over 1 million dollars to send local children to university and summer camps. Part of the program includes tennis instructions for local kids, in fact, some of the resort tennis pros started out as Old Road Fund kids.

I was the guest of Curtain Bluff last year to experience their tennis camps and share my opinion. Clearly I love it, I’m returning this April with my entire family in tow. Join me.
